Tyrese Maxey and Doc Rivers Telling Two Different Stories About Coming off the Bench
Tyrese Maxey was on Million Dollaz Worth of Game, where he admitted that he felt sick having to come off the bench last year:
“I called my mom. ‘I’m sick, I don’t feel like I’m supposed to be on the bench”
Doc Rivers really brought Tyrese Maxey off the bench for a stretch. That’s CRIMINAL. pic.twitter.com/gUVgpVhtef

Maxey: “It hurt me, I had some days where I’d call my mom and I’m telling her I’m sick. I don’t think I’m supposed to be on the bench. I feel like I showed why I’m a starter.”
No Sixers fans would have any idea of this, because Doc Rivers straight up lied to everyone, saying that it was Maxey’s decision. Look at the first two lines from this article written last January by Inquirer beat reporter Gina Mizell:
Doc Rivers recently received a text message from Tyrese Maxey that the 76ers coach acknowledges would be rare for any player to send.
Maxey, who averages 20.8 points per game and is widely regarded as a rising star, suggested his coach try bringing him off the bench.
Straight up lied. Almost ruined a star point guard’s confidence because he’s such a terrible coach. I would love to explore the mind of Doc Rivers. Take one of Miss Frizzle’s Magic School Busses and fly right into Doc’s ear canal and find out what the fuck that guy is thinking all the time. It probably looks like this in the middle of games:
Could you imagine the capacity it was working at when we got the “C’mon guys” speech in the playoffs?

Or while the team blew that 4th quarter lead in Game 6.
Tough Tuesday for Doc. We had the Maxey quote and his comments on THE RINGER(!), saying Daryl Morey “talked too much” before the trade deadline, which would sometimes make it hard to coach players linked to trade rumors:
What is it like coaching an NBA team surrounded by trade rumors?

This is coming from the same guy who ignited the Ben Simmons situation due to his comments after a playoff game, right? That made Daryl have to bend over backwards to get something done. What about the guys he buried on the bench who became serviceable NBA players after they left, like Isaiah Joe and Matisse Thybulle? The ego of this guy and the lack of accountability is insane. It’s one thing to be a shitty coach when it comes to X’s and O’s, but it’s another to just downright pass blame every opportunity you can get a microphone in front of you. And I thought I was going to like Doc the media personality. Now I’m starting to hate him.
P.S. My favorite part might be Simmons talking about the “Celtics nucleus” when he asked the question like Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum haven’t been involved in trade rumors every year for the past three seasons.
