Tyler Steen Getting the First Crack at Right Guard in the Post-Jason Kelce Era
Day 1 of Eagles training camp. Nick Sirianni was asked about his plan for right guard:
“Yeah we’ll see. Obviously don’t have to release a depth chart yet. Don’t have to say what our plans are, just like we don’t have to say what our plans are for our end-of-game defense. That would be something we’re continuing to work through. Obviously we’ll see as we go. Looking forward to today and Tyler (Steen) will start out there at the right guard position today as we start. But we’ll see how that goes.”
Cam Jurgens moves inside to play center, covering for the retired Jason Kelce. Obviously the rest of the line is locked up with Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson on the left and Lane Johnson at right tackle. That leaves right guard as the only positional battle for camp.
Steen was a third round draft pick in 2023, a tweener of sorts. He played left and right tackle for both Vanderbilt and Alabama, so the jury is still out on moving him inside. He’s 24 years old, 6’6″, a little less than 325 pounds, very similarly-built to Dickerson. The other options are free agent Matt Hennessy, the former Temple guard, then Darian Kinnard, Trevor Keegan, Jason Poe, and Max Scharping. Mekhi Becton played tackle for the Jets but is also in the mix at guard. The Eagles list a lot of guys as hybrids on their official site, like G/C, or simply “OL.” There will be competition for the starting job but Steen is getting the first reps one day 1.
