Assessing the Eagles' Chances at +250 to be the NFC's Number 1 Seed
It’s down to the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles for home-field advantage in the NFC.
That’s the general assumption across the NFL, and the odds suggest the same.
Detroit is -250 at FanDuel and -195 at DraftKings to be the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC. The Eagles are +250 at DK and +260 at FD.
That’s a fair price considering the Lions are one game ahead in the standings and have looked unbeatable for most of the last month.
There’s no head-t0-head tiebreaker in play for these teams, although it would be sick to watch the two play in the regular season, so conference record will be the tiebreaker used. Right now, the Lions are 6-1 in the NFC and the Birds are 6-2.
There’s no question that the Eagles have the easier schedule over the next six weeks.
The Birds play Baltimore and Pittsburgh, but also have Carolina and the three other NFC East teams left on the schedule. The Cowboys still have Cooper Rush at quarterback, the Giants don’t have a clue, and Washington’s fallen off in the last three weeks.
At minimum, the Birds will go 4-2 to finish the regular season and win the NFC East. That’ll be good enough to land the No. 2 seed since Seattle and Arizona are three games back in the win column already.
Detroit has four NFC North games left, with two of them against Chicago, and they also play the Bills and 49ers. The Bills game will be must-watch TV regardless of the outcome, and while the Niners game looks less daunting right now, San Francisco will need every win possible to either capture the NFC West or sneak into the final wild-card spot.
It’s worth noting the Lions are only one game ahead of Minnesota and Green Bay is 8-3. Those games will be tough and really the only layups left for Jared Goff and Co. are against the Bears.
Any Detroit losses, outside of the Buffalo game, will matter to the conference record tiebreaker. Of course, any Lions loss is welcome right now, but a 5-1 Lions finish with a defeat to the Bills won’t help the Eagles.
Because the NFC North is so strong, I would seriously look into the Eagles at their current price to land the top seed. Remember, these are odds just to be the No. 1 seed, not to win the conference, which the Eagles are a bit higher to do so at +300.
One of Green Bay and Minnesota, or hell even both, will give Detroit a run for its money, and if the Lions are somehow dislodged from the top seed in the next six weeks, the Eagles will be even more dangerous with the playoffs running through Lincoln Financial Field.
