Four former Phillies have returned to the BBWAA Hall of Fame Ballot for 2025:

  • Chase Utley (2nd year)
  • Jimmy Rollins (4th year)
  • Bobby Abreu (6th year)
  • Billy Wagner (10th and final year)

2025 is Billy Wagner’s last chance to be enshrined into Cooperstown. Wagner received 284 votes in 2024, falling 5 votes short at 73.8% of the 75% requirement. Wagner had a 2.31 career ERA in 903 innings, logging 11.92 Ks per 9 in 16 seasons.

Bobby Abreu hasn’t gotten the traction in voting that some expected, especially for a player with a .395 all time on-base percentage. Abreu is a 2x All-Star, a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner, and racked up a career 128 OPS+ in 18 seasons, 9 with the Phillies. Abreu got just 14.8% of votes last year, tied with Jimmy Rollins, who both trail Chase Utley.

There are cases for both Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley, although I think Utley would have the edge as far as Cooperstown. Utley got 28.8% in his first year on the ballot, an impressive first-year showing for the second baseman. J-Roll will enter his fourth year on the ballot in 2025 after receiving 14.8% of votes last year.

Ichiro Suzuki and C.C Sabathia make up the two first-year players on the ballot that have the best chance of becoming first-ballot hall of famers. Other first-year members include Carlos Gonzalez, Ian Kinsler, Curtis Granderson, Hanley Ramirez, and Troy Tulowitzki.

While his name won’t be on the main ballot, Dick Allen is on the Classic Baseball Era ballot in 2025. Allen played 15 seasons in the league, 9 with the Phillies. The Phillies retired Allen’s #15 back in September of 2020. Allen passed away on December 7th that year.

BBWAA voters must make their picks by December 31st. Hall of Fame results will be announced on January 21st.
