Another day, another Juan Soto report. This time, it’s Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. On the most recent episode of “The Phillies Show” with Zolecki, Jim Salisbury, and Ruben Amaro Jr, Zolecki basically shoots down the report that the Phillies have not communicated at all with Scott Boras. He says that the Phillies have talked to Boras and still expect to meet with Soto and his camp at some point.

Zolecki: “There was a report just a few days ago that the Phillies have not met with Juan Soto yet, they’re going to meet with him at some point, but they haven’t communicated at all with Scott Boras or anybody associated with Boras. I’ve been told…no surprise, that they’ve communicated with Boras about Soto and others. I can tell you that they have not met with him. They expect to meet with him at some point, I do not know when that will be.”

It has been reporter by multiple MLB Insiders, Randy Miller of NJ.com being the first, that 5 teams have put some sort of offer on the table to Soto:

  • Yankees
  • Red Sox
  • Mets
  • Blue Jays
  • Dodgers

The Phillies aren’t going to go down in this Soto fight without swinging. They’re not the favorite. They may not even be in the top two or three. But they’re going to at least have a meeting with Soto and his camp. When will that meeting be? Who knows.

The question now for the Phillies is if they can make an impression to jump teams that have reportedly already made this first offer. The Dodgers signed Blake Snell Tuesday night to a 5-year, $182M contract with some of the money deferred. I can’t imagine this will stop the Dodgers in the Soto sweepstakes, but it does have to be in the back of their head.

The reason I’ve had the faith I do in the Phillies is because of the connections. Soto has played with Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber. Kevin Long is one of the bigger reasons for Soto’s rise to the top. The Phillies are in an obvious win-now situation, with an elite core. Is that what Soto wants, or does he want to be the #1 face of a franchise?

How much does that matter for a guy that is going to get offered $550M-$650M contract offers from multiple teams? It seems that the Soto signing will come sooner rather than later. Bryce Harper didn’t sign with the Phillies until February 28th. That won’t be the case with Soto.
