The Flyers point streak ended with a 6-3 home loss to the Flames on Tuesday night. Sam Ersson was pulled in the first period and Ivan Fedotov stabilized things, but they couldn’t erase the deficit.

Matvei Michkov got an assist on the 3rd goal to improve to 45 points on the season, which now has him in the top 20 among Flyers rookie point producers.

The updated list:

The assist put him above Jim Johnson, Thomas Eriksson, and Janne Niinimaa. Five more points and he jumps six players for a 12th-place tie.

If you extrapolate, Michkov’s 45 points in 60 games is 0.75 points per game. If he plays in all of the remaining games, he will finish on 80 games and 60 points, putting him in a tie for 8th. Of course, you look at some of those guys up top there, Eric Lindros and Bill Barber for instance, and they didn’t even play 70 games their rookie seasons while putting up insane numbers. That’s one wrinkle. The other is Michkov’s ice time, which is 16 minutes on average this season. You’ve got guys on this list, Ghost being one of them, who were getting 20 minutes a night and playing on the blue line and/or racking up power play assists.

You can parse the numbers in difference ways, but Michkov finishing on a strong note would be a nice way to finish rebuilding season #2. He’s put himself on a list with some great Flyers and can keep pushing his name further up while maybe making a late Calder push.
