Craig Carton Officially Not Coming Back to Philly

When the Craig Carton-to-Philly rumors began last month, we thought that he or his agent was leaking to the New York Post in order to leverage a new offer from WFAN. Carton was looking for a new gig after serving one year in prison for securities and wire fraud related to a ticket selling scheme that defrauded investors out of $4.8 million dollars.

New York was always the destination, and his WFAN return was made official this week when the station announced he’d be taking over the PM drive slot. On Thursday, he did a special one-hour return and talked about his recent issues:

That was a pretty honest self-assessment.

Carton will partner with Evan Roberts for the 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. timeslot, Monday through Friday, with the show being called “Carton and Roberts.” This cleans up the mess Entercom created with the Mike Francesa double-retirement, which resulted in former Philly host Chris Carlin being axed as collateral damage.

You’d have to be in your mid-30s or 40s, at least, to remember when Carton was on 610 WIP in Philadelphia. He had a short stint here in the mid-1990s, which included the lawsuit filed by the Flyers when Carton alleged that Eric Lindros missed a game because he was a hungover. That ended in an out-of-court settlement.

I’ve been told in the past that 97.5 did have interest in Carton, with whom there was a link based on past relationships, but in this case he was always going to be going back to WFAN as a first (and probably only) choice.
