So Tuesday night the Brian Flores news broke. The former Dolphins coach filed a 58-page lawsuit against the NFL and three teams, claiming discrimination in job interviews and related allegations that go back to his time with Miami.

The story is super complicated and there are a lot of moving parts. Tim has actually volunteered to write something more in-depth on it, but for now I’ll give you the CliffsNotes:

  1. The lawsuit claims the Giants had Brian Daboll in place before Flores interviewed in New York. Flores shared text messages from Bill Belichick that his team believes corroborate the claim. The allegation is that his interview was merely to satisfy Rooney Rule requirements.
  2. When interviewing in Denver in 2019, he says John Elway and others showed up hungover and late to the meeting.
  3. There are allegations surrounding Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, who reportedly incentivized tanking and offered money to lose on purpose.

Those are the three main pieces of the lawsuit, and the thing getting the most scrutiny here is the text messages from Belichick:

Those text messages suggest that the Giants decided to hire Brian Daboll before Flores even interviewed. The NFL and the various teams named in the lawsuit had denied that any sort of discrimination took place, and now it gets really interesting. This is one of the bigger NFL moments of the last decade, or perhaps longer. We should all be very interested to see how it plays out.

Flores is doing the interview circuit today, and we’ll hear more from him moving forward, but his first appearance was with CBS Mornings:
