Seth Joyner Challenges “Disrespectful” Howard Eskin to a Football Debate

This a beautiful trainwreck of content. Two bozos arguing about the Eagles:
Howard then responded to Seth’s challenge on today’s @WIPMiddayShow: “I don’t respond to people who don’t understand the way the game is played today.”https://t.co/AjF7EuuO8H

Right. So in one corner, we have a washed radio blowhard and in the other corner we have a guy who falls for fake climate change tweets and would complain about giving up a field goal if the Eagles won the Super Bowl 70 to 3.
I’m inclined to side with Seth Joyner just for the fact that he actually played football and isn’t a grandstanding provocateur. There will always be a baseline level of respect for that reason alone, no matter how many Negadelphia rants we are subjected to. They say the enemy of your enemy is your friend, so now Seth and I are going out for drinks tonight. Seriously. If Howard Eskin was being challenged by Kim Jong Un, I’d really have to think it over before declaring a side.
That said, I begrudgingly award Howard an arbitrary two points for saying that Seth doesn’t understand contemporary football. Fact check – true! If Seth was the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, he’d blitz 70 times a game, because it’s all about getting to the quarterback. That said, the sick burn fizzles out when you realize that Howard knows even less about ball, despite his exalted status as sideline radio reporter and part time Saturday morning host. It’s hard to imagine what this debate might look like since both guys hit their respective professional peaks when the 46 defense was considered innovative and Wayne Fontes was coach of the year.
“Look at all the good football teams in the National Football League,” Joyner said on Monday, October 16th one day after the Eagles’ loss to the Jets. “The one thing that they do efficiently is that they run the football because it gives their quarterback the best chance for success. I don’t care if you’re talking about Patrick Mahomes, I don’t care if you’re talking about Tua Tagovailoa, I don’t care who you’re talking about. They win because they run the ball efficiently.”
Eskin strongly disagrees with Joyner’s philosophy.
“I also want to straighten out one of your friends, Hugh. I am so tired, ‘Well, you got to run the ball,’ Eskin said on Tuesday’s 94WIP Midday Show.
“All this, ‘Run the football’ nonsense is just total nonsense. And Seth Joyner put out the most bogus stat, bogus! I can’t believe he was a former football player. He’s masquerading as a former football player. He says yesterday…the top three teams in football, they all lead the league 1-2-3 in rushing. Why do they lead the league? Because they’re teams that get leads and when they get leads they run the ball. It’s such a ridiculous, asinine, phony stat, stop it!”
I volunteer to host this debate. We’ll do it at Chickie’s and Pete’s in South Philadelphia. It will be must-miss television.
