“I’ve been doing analytics myself, my own way, for years. And I don’t share my process with anybody, even fellow coaches. So, I believe in analytics. I think analytics people miss the boat a little bit on what’s important, but I’m not gonna tell ’em what’s important.”
How much you wanna bet this super-secret formula is the eye test? Fangio looks at the players with his eyeballs and analyzes how they play. He’s old school, right? Coached football since 1980. Do we really think he’s created his own analytics model, like expected linebacker win rate with a two-gap run stuffer above replacement player, or xLWRTGRSARP?
This is so weird. He has a secret formula but no one knows about it. His proteges have no clue and he doesn’t offer the info to anyone. What happens if Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman ask for it? “Sorry, you’re not privy to this information.” This is absurdly fascinating. Maybe Fangio is just “taking the piss,” as they say in the UK.
