A Look at the Phillies vs. Cardinals Doubleheader Odds

Let’s play Two at the Bank today! Well, as I write this it’s currently downpouring, so Mother Nature is the -1000 favorite to win the day.
Anyway, the Phils and Cardinals should get both games in today once everything clears. Let’s hope for some hittin’ weather in Game 1 because the matchup is juicy from the Phils’ perspective. St. Louis’ Game 1 starter Erick Fedde’s allowed at least five hits in each of his last five appearances. He’s coming off a complete game against the Nationals, but he still allowed five hits in that outing. Fedde’s hits allowed props sits at over/under 5.5 at Bet365. That’s a perfect line to attack if you don’t want to bet specific Phillies hitters. Upon first glance, right-handed hitters would appear to be the way to go because righties have a .256 batting average against Fedde compared to .214 for lefties.
HOWEVER
Look at these head-to-head numbers:
- Bryce Harper (6 home runs, 9 RBI, .500 AVG, 1.957 OPS in 22 ABs)
- Kyle Schwarber (1 home run, 1 RBI, .429 AVG, 1.556 OPS in 7 ABs)
Schwarber is +400 and Harper is +475 at Bet365. I mean, with those head-to-head numbers, especially for Bryce, you have to take a flier on both to go yard regardless of the conditions.
Jesus Luzardo hasn’t been perfect lately, but he’s been serviceable with a pair of 5.1-inning outings in May. He allowed two earned runs in each of those games, so if the Phils get a similar outing from him, I’d look into Luzardo at +135 to record a win. All you need is five solid innings from Luzardo and the Phils should be ahead after five given the numbers versus Fedde.
Game 2 could be lighter on runs with Sonny Gray going up against Aaron Nola. At their best, Gray and Nola can mow down batters and last deep into the sixth and seventh innings. Nola shined in his last home start with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed versus Arizona. Gray dazzled in his last appearance with eight Ks over seven innings. Player props for Game 2 won’t be available until Game 1 ends, but I would look into both strikeout props and the under, similar to how we played Monday’s game.
