Philadelphia Phillies Chase Rate Update: It’s Getting Worse

Now, an updated look at the Phillies’ chase rate after a weekend shellacking at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers:

They’re down to 19th in Major League Baseball, so still technically middle of the pack and not yet bottom ten. You see can there’s barely more than a percentage point separating 10th place and 20th place, so not a lot of variation there.
Back in April, the Phillies had MLB’s lowest chase rate, just 25% through the season’s first two weeks. Through May 9th, it slipped to 27.5%, but was still in the top half among the 30 teams and much better than what they finished with in 2024. Now it’s slipped a bit further to 28.6%. It’s still an improvement from the 30.3% chase rate from last season, which was 25th in Major League Baseball. In the Mets NLDS series loss, they posted a pitiful 31.8%.
Coincidentally, the Phillies’ walk rate is still very good, 9.5% according to Sportradar, which is 6th-best in the league. But it was 10.6% before May, so it’s dropped about a full percentage point. Their strikeout percentage is rather low and hasn’t shifted very much.
You can add some more context when looking at how much contact the Phillies do or do not make when they chase stuff thrown outside of the zone. Right now their out of zone contact percentage is 53%, which is 25th-worst in MLB. The out of zone whiff percentage is then 47%. So it’s one thing to swing at garbage and hit the garbage, but they do a lot of swinging at the garbage and miss it. They are hitting barely move than half of the non-strike pitches that they swing at.
Regardless, they are 36-23.
This has been your chase rate update for June 2nd, 2025.
