Philadelphia Phillies Chase Rate Update: Started from the Top Now We’re Here (Near the Bottom)

Let’s get a Philadelphia Phillies chase rate update after a tough loss to the San Francisco Giants:

Down to 29.3% after hitting 29% in mid-June. It is the worst number they’ve posted this season, after starting the year with baseball’s lowest chase rate through the early part of April.
For background, the Phillies finished the 2024 regular season with a 30.3% chase rate, then chased on 31.8% of pitches in the NLDS Mets series. The Sportradar data shows that they’re making contact with 53.8% of out-of-zone pitches, which is 22nd overall, while their whiff percent on these same pitches is 46.2%, or ninth-most.
So it’s one thing for them to swing at stuff that’s thrown out of the zone, but they don’t make contact with much frequency when they do. Compare that to a team like the Blue Jays, for instance, who have the 9th-highest chase rate at 29%, but make contact on a league-leading 64.3% of those pitches. The Phillies swing at junk and also miss the junk.
Individually, the trend is largely the same as it was in May and June. Edmundo Sosa, Johan Rojas, Nick Castellanos, Bryce Harper, and J.T. Realmuto have chase rates above 30%. The main guys below 30% are Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, Brandon Marsh, Max Kepler, Bryson Stott, and Kyle Schwarber. There are only 12 qualified MLB batters with chase rates below 20%, and Schwarber is right behind them with a 20.2% individual rate.
