Phillies ace Zack Wheeler has been placed on the 15-day IL with a blood clot in his right shoulder:

Wheeler hasn’t looked himself since his complete game on July 6th vs. the Reds. Since his 9-inning, one-hit performance, Wheeler has allowed 34 hits and 17 earned runs across six starts.

His start in Texas on Sunday, August 10th, was pushed back due to stiffness in his arm. He threw five innings on Friday night in Washington, allowing just two earned runs, but it seems like everything has been a battle lately for the 35-year-old veteran.

Wheeler will undergo further testing, but there is currently no timetable on his return, according to Dave Dombrowski. Paul Buchheit, the Phillies’ head athletic trainer, doesn’t believe the stiffness reported last week from the blood clot, per Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic.

Just a brutal blow for the Phillies. If a few weeks on the IL gets Wheeler right for October, then that can be a positive in the long run. But seeing your ace go down with a blood clot in his shoulder isn’t necessarily encouraging.
