It is Once Again Time for a Hoffman Out of the Phillies’ Bullpen

Not Jeff Hoffman, unfortunately:

Prior to tonight’s game against the Seattle Mariners, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Nolan Hoffman from triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room on the 26-man roster, right-handed pitcher Max Lazar was optioned to Lehigh Valley. Hoffman will wear No. 47.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Hoffman was the guy they got from the Rangers in exchange for cash considerations back in mid-June. He had a 5.19 ERA in the minors at the time, which made you think he’d fit nicely in the Phillies bullpen. Like white on rice.

Since then, he’s made 17 relief appearances and allowed seven runs in 19 innings, which is good for a 3.32 ERA. He has three saves, 27 strikeouts, and 11 walks. He’s actually never pitched in the majors and if the Phils use him, it’ll be his big league debut.

Lazar was blown up in his last outing, giving up three earned runs on four hits. It was feast or famine with him. Most of the time he’d give you a clean and solid inning and get the job done. But when he was off, oh boy. Was he off. It was something like 85% solidness and then he’d look like a double-A pitcher 15% of the time. An IronPigs stint could be good for him here. The Phils also have Jose Alvarado eligible on Tuesday.
