Here’s Mike Schmidt Saying “Shit” on Live Television

Before Kyle Schwarber hit four Schwarbombs on Thursday night, the last Phillie to do it was Mike Schmidt, back in 1976. He joined Michael Barkann and Ricky Bo on the postgame show:
“Oh gosh, actually I hit a single, and then in my third at-bat I hit my first home run, and shit, that was breaking out of it for me at the time. I was on a big slump and I basically would have taken anything in that game, let alone four home runs.”

Possibly the best line delivered by a Phillie on live television since Pete Rose joined the broadcast to talk about “cock-high” fastballs a few years ago.
That 1976 game? The Phillies won it 18 to 16. A total slugfest with nine home runs combined. Schmidt had six plate appearances and popped out his first time up, then hit the single. After that, it was four dingers in a row, knocking in eight runs. Bob Boone and Garry Maddox hit home runs of their own, and Steve Carlton only made it through 1.2 innings while giving up seven runs on seven hits. Talk about a crazy game. I remember it like it was yesterday.
The other two Phillies to hit four homers in a game are Chuck Klein, who did it in 1936, and Ed Delahanty, way back in 1896.
