With Bob Myers Joining Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, Here’s the Advice He Should Give for the Sixers, Commanders, Devils, and Crystal Palace

How’s this for a Friday morning story? –
Myers will work in a full-time role with the goal of maximizing opportunities and bolstering processes for a Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) portfolio that include the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA, the New Jersey Devils of the NHL, Crystal Palace F.C. of the English Premier League, and an investment in NASCAR team Joe Gibbs Racing.
…
Myers’ arrival — and his reputation as a respected and powerful figure in the industry — strengthens HBSE’s executive ranks, as he will work strategically with ownership and the senior leadership groups at each team. He will remain based in California, but travel regularly to HBSE/Commanders properties and events.
So basically a full-time consultant.
Pretty cool job if you think about it. You have the ear of two bazillionaires and you tell them what to do with the sports teams they own. Priorities, in order, are the Sixers, Palace, NASCAR, the Commies, then the Devils. Nobody cares about the Devils.
OF COURSE, people are going to assume that Myers steps into the GM role if Daryl Morey is hired. Maybe that’s true, maybe not. Maybe it makes some Camden front office seats a little warmer, or maybe not. Everybody knows this is an era-defining season headlined by the health of two injured 30-somethings making a lot of money, so it’s not like we weren’t already in a high-stakes situation to begin with. Daryl knows that if things go sideways this year, that’s probably it for him. Then the next guy would have to figure out what to do with Joel Embiid and Paul George.
Here’s the advice Myers should give for each franchise:
- Sixers: priority number one. devote maximum resources in an effort to win the title
- Palace: channel remaining resources into this club, which can finish top 5 in the Premier League. we’re sick of seeing the same teams at the top of the table
- Joe Gibbs racing: waste of gas, who cares
- Commanders: trade Jayden Daniels, fire Adam Peters, cancel new stadium plans
- Devils: fold the franchise and reinvest the money
- Prudential Center: raze it to the ground, put the savings into pedestrian bridges at the south philly sports complex
