I’m Terribly Concerned that Temple Will Lose Four Games in a Row and Miss Out on a Bowl
The Temple Owls are 5-5 and on a two-game skid after losing a 14-13 rock fight against Army this weekend:
This game looked like an abomination on paper and it sure played out that way. Army ran the ball 63 times for 224 yards, which is 3.6 yards per attempt. They controlled 37:38 of clock and went 7-14 on third down and converted 4 of 5 fourth down attempts. Their quarterback threw the ball three times, completing one pass for 26 yards.
Temple, meantime, was 2-8 on third down and missed a 45-yard field goal on their second drive. They only had six possessions all game long because they only had the ball for about 22 minutes.
This was a team that was 5-3 not long ago, and on the verge of bowl eligibility for the first time since 2019. They had four games in which they needed just one win to get it done. They still have two more left, so all good, right?
Not necessarily.
The Owls have this weekend off, then the two remaining teams on the schedule are 7-2 Tulane at home and 8-1 North Texas on the road. Tulane’s only losses are both on the road, at Ole Miss and UTSA. They have wins over Northwestern and Duke and knocked off eight-win Memphis 38-32 on the road. North Texas just beat Navy at home and has wins against Wazzou and Western Michigan. Their only loss is to a ranked South Florida team. They hung 45 on the Army team that Temple just played and they’ve scored at least 30 points in every single game this season.
Here’s hoping the Owls figure it out, maybe take a break and get settled this weekend before giving it their all against Tulane, because if bowl eligibility comes down to that final game in Denton, then it’s not looking good.
