A.I. is getting hammered for reportedly half-assing a number of public events during a recent Australia tour:

Summary from the viral Reddit post, via NBA Base:

Allen Iverson is facing heavy backlash following a “disgusting” appearance at a charity event in Melbourne for children battling cancer.

Families in attendance claim:

• Iverson arrived nearly 2 hours late.

• Security told families he was “having a bad day” and didn’t want to come out.

• He refused to allow parents in the room during the meeting.

• He refused to sign any jerseys or memorabilia.

• He did not speak to the children and kept his hands in his pockets during photos without smiling. One family reportedly drove over 6 hours for the event and described Iverson as having “zero interest” in being there.

The sick children visit was organized by a group called Challenge along with Iverson’s management. The Reddit poster notes that his 12-year-old brother is receiving chemotherapy for lymphoma and and wrote that “(Iverson) knew the kids were sick, and still did not put any effort or acknowledgement to that… Everyone was so disgusted in his behaviour, it was honestly so disappointing.”

There are similar reports of Iverson showing up late to other events and leaving early, being short with fans and media and oftentimes doing the bare minimum in a perfunctory fashion, it that.

This is not exactly news for anybody who has known anything about A.I. over the years. He’s never been the most, uh, “timely” individual, and every other person you meet will tell you that they saw Iverson in the casino at some level of inebriation. This is well documented and is no secret, but it’s still disappointing to hear these stories, especially since A.I. was such a popular player back in the day and shaped an entire generation of Sixers fans, and even NBA fans at large.

Iverson is scheduled to be back in Philly for Saturday’s 25th anniversary celebration of the 2001 team that went to the finals, so we’ll see if he shows up on time.
