Two Phillies Made the World Baseball Classic All-Tournament Team
Two Phillies made the all-WBC team and they both played for the paisans.
From Brent Maguire’s writeup at MLB.com:
Outfield: Dante Nori, Italy
Key stats: 1.185 OPS, .400 BANori was one of many players responsible for Italy’s shocking run to the semifinals, as he batted .400 and drove in six runs for the Italians.
Pitcher: Aaron Nola, Italy
Key stats: 9 IP, 1 R, 8 KItaly needed a true ace-like performance for a deep tournament run and they certainly got it from Nola, who only allowed one run in nine innings across two starts.
Nola looked good in two games. Looked much more like the Aaron Nola of seasons that came before 2025. He played a role in saving Team USA with his performance against Mexico and then threw four innings of one-run baseball against Venezuela in the semifinal, striking out three while allowing just a solo shot.
Nori was a great WBC story, going 8 for 20 and leading the Italians with six runs batted in. He hit two home runs and walked twice while striking out five times and stealing two bases. He finished with a .750 slug and .435 on-base percentage.
A first round draft pick in 2024, Nori is still only 21 years old and spent most of last season with the Clearwater Threshers. He hit .262 down there over 109 games with 27 extra-base hits and 43 RBI. He’s a top 6-8 prospect in the organization and once Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford, and Aidan Miller move up, he’ll be one of the main guys to watch alongside Gage Wood, Aroon Escobar, and Gabriel Rincones Jr.
Kevin has been writing about Philadelphia sports since 2009. He spent seven years in the CBS 3 sports department and started with the Union during the team's 2010 inaugural season. He went to the academic powerhouses of Boyertown High School and West Virginia University. email - k.kinkead@sportradar.com
