Flyers Must Channel the Power of Megadeth if They Want to Win Game 6

We were talking about mongrel Flyers the fans the other day, and why we need raging maniacs to fill the building on Wednesday night, when Twitter user @TBFlyer brought up this incredible video from 2008:

Honestly, I had completely forgotten about this. It’s Megadeth founder and mastermind Dave Mustaine addressing Flyers fans back in 2008 during the opening round playoff series against the Washington Capitals. A guy named Mike Wise from The Washington Post ripped the Orange and Black in a column titled Beaten to the Punch, in which he lamented (surprise) the Flyers’ physicality.

Wrote Wise:

“The Capitals didn’t come out as Eastern Conference foes; they entered the playing surface like Russell Crowe entered the Coliseum in “Gladiator.” Flyer fans didn’t want to beat Washington as much as see Ovechkin bludgeoned, his teammates emasculated.

It’s almost impossible to fathom, but the Capitals took the ice in front of a building as loud as Verizon Center last Friday. The fans wore orange instead of the Capitals’ red, and many of the women and children looked as if they could work security for Megadeth.

On I-95 entering town there is a billboard of Riley Cote, a stumpy rogue who engaged in 24 fights this season, twice as many as Capitals tough guy Donald Brashear. Cote’s wild-man eyes and his quick fists are the only features shown of the Flyers’ player.”

First of all, “stumpy rogue” is such a wild description of Riley Cote. He should go back in time and give Mike Wise a knuckle sandwich. But the Megadeth line stuck and was weaponized against the Caps. The Flyers gave out “Megadeth Security” shirts and Mustaine recorded the video above. The Flyers went on to win the series 4-3 before losing to… the Penguins in the conference finals.

But I think after a couple of losses in this current series, the Flyers need some jam. They need a boost. They need to channel the power of Megadeth like they did almost 20 years ago now. We need “Megadeth security” fans in the barn on Wednesday night. I will even curate a Megadeth playlist for the Flyers’ arena production staff, just like Dianna Russini curated a Spotify playlist for Mike Vrabel (allegedly).

It would include:

  • Wake Up Dead (the Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin era on Thursday morning)
  • Take No Prisoners
  • Sweating Bullets (me if the Flyers lose Game 6)
  • Ashes in Your Mouth
  • Train of Consequences
  • She-Wolf
  • Blackmail the Universe (a song about Dan Muse working the refs)
  • I Know Jack (Pittsburgh media writing about hockey)

Flyers in 6. Take no Prisoners! TAKE NO SHIT!

*Ironically, perhaps, Megadeth wrote a song called “Crush ‘Em” that was used a hockey anthem. It was a terrible song from their worst album, “Risk.”
