Ho hum, another win for the Phils.

They’re 40-33 and would be 1st place right now if they played in the AL Central or AL West.

Alas, they’re seven games behind the Braves in the NL East, and 8-2 in Jesus Luzardo’s last 10 starts:

Since 4/28, the Phils have wins against the Marlins (2x), White Sox, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Padres, Red Sox, and Giants with Luzardo on the mound. Six of those games featured quality starts.

The two losses were against Cincinnati and Colorado, the former a 4-1 dud in which the Phillies couldn’t hit Chase Burns, and the latter an extra-innings flop with Luzardo getting blown up in the third.

Otherwise, he’s been excellent, posting the following numbers going back to the San Fran game:

  • 2.93 ERA
  • 58.1 innings pitched
  • 1.20 WHIP
  • 64 strikeouts
  • 9.87 K/9
  • 26.4 strikeout percentage
  • 2.78 BB/9
  • 7.4 walk percentage
  • 52 hits allowed
  • 6 home runs conceded
  • .241 opponent batting average
  • .309 BABIP
  • 3.17 FIP

The ERA and FIP numbers are close, which means the results are well supported and not reliant on luck.

There’s a strikeout-to-walk % sitting at 19 as well, and elite starters are usually in the 18-22% range there.

The Chicago and Colorado starts are the outliers pulling his numbers down over this time period:

He’s been great overall. Cristopher Sanchez and Zack Wheeler look elite, like they normally do, but with Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter having the seasons they’re having, Luzardo figuring it out has been a really nice storyline here as the Phils continue to stack wins.
