After Three Comeback Wins in a Row, These Phillies Stats are So Ridiculous That They Don’t Even Seem Real

These stats and records are so wild that you have to re-read them just to get a grasp of the ridiculousness. They’ll probably never be broken:

Just to review, in case you’ve been living under a rock:

  • The Phillies took 3 of 4 from the Nationals.
  • On Tuesday, they were down 8-6 in the 9th and scored 8 runs to win 14-9. Brandon Marsh and Bryson Stott hit home runs in the comeback.
  • On Wednesday, they were down 4-3 in the ninth, and Derek Hill hit a two-run shot en route to a 5-4 win.
  • On Thursday, they were tied 5-5 in the 9th, and Bryce Harper went oppo taco with a two-run bomb on the way to a 10-5 come-from-behind victory.

They could have been swept with how poorly they were playing earlier in these games, yet walk away with another series win. They’ve lost only one series this month (Milwaukee). Now they’re 45-36 and four games behind the Braves in the NL East.

After the flurry of late wins this week, the Phils now have a +16 run differential in innings 7 through 9. That’s tied for 9th best with the Marlins. They’ve scored 113 runs in the late portions of the game while allowing just 97, and they’ve logged 18 comeback wins on the year.

They’re starting to have that feel about them, you know, like a team that could do something this season. The Rob Thomson firing feels like it was a hundred years ago. They’ve got some issues, like finding an Andrew Painter replacement and question marks surrounding Aaron Nola’s effectiveness. They still need to look into outfield reinforcements unless Derek Hill continues to play like Ken Griffey Jr. But everything suggests going for it, whatever that may look like. These guys aren’t getting younger, so it’s now or never… right? Or nah?
