We asked the Sportradar AI to present us with a random Philadelphia Phillie for July 7th, 2026, and the name drawn from the figurative electronic hat was Shawn Wooten.

I have never heard of this player before, so I got to Googling and learned that:

  • Wooten signed as a free agent in 2004 and played 33 games for the Phillies.
  • He was brought in to back up Jim Thome at 1st base, and had a background as a utility player who could catch and play both corner infield positions.
  • His slash line wasn’t very good here – just .170/.228/.226.
  • They sent him down to the minors in July and brought him back up in September, then he left in free agency.
  • It looks like he had a 2003 knee injury that changed the trajectory of his career and affected his hitting.

Before Philly, Wooten was an Angel, and won the 2002 World Series on a team that had Troy Glaus, Scott Spiezio, Garret Anderson, John Lackey, Jarrod Washburn, and Troy Percival. Baseball Reference says he was a backup DH behind Brad Fullmer and knocked in 19 runs during the regular season with a .773 OPS, so it looks like he was a steady bench bat for Anaheim. The game logs show a three-hit performance in game 4 of the ALDS against the Yankees, with two RBI coming from a solo homer off David Wells and then an RBI single off Ramiro Mendoza.

Here’s the homer:

Wooten finished his career with the Red Sox and then played some minor league ball before wrapping things up in 2008. It looks like he got into coaching with the Padres organization and then moved to the Dodgers org and Angels org. He now runs a baseball academy in Minnesota called “Hit Dawg Academy” and posts monthly on IG. He’s got a wife and kids and all of that.

Shawn Wooten is your random Philadelphia Phillie of the day.
