This was brought to our attention* –
“if a lot of people do use their shoe, then it is pretty disgusting to be touching that after all the stuff people have stepped on during the day is on there“
That’s certainly true. If there’s dirty piss water on the floor, and you flush the toilet with your shoe, then you are transferring dirty piss water from shoe to handle. Then people who touch the handle get dirty piss water on their hands, which is gross.
But the premise of the question I believe is invalid because you’re washing your hands afterward. That’s really the crux of the matter. Whether you use your hand or foot to flush the public toilet is not relevant. If you don’t wash your hands after using the shoe-flushed toilet OR the hand-flushed toilet, you’re a dirtball. Now you’re the carrier of dirty piss water germs.
Disgusting!
The other thing to consider is option three. You might not flush the toilet at all. “If it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down.” That’s what they told us in science class at Boyertown Area Senior High School. You save water using this method.
