Vic Fangio Says Jalen Hurts Looks Faster

Vic Fangio spoke to the media on Tuesday morning and had this to say about the Eagles quarterback:

“Yeah, I think Jalen’s having a good camp. You know he –  I think he’s – looks faster. You know, we’ve – Obviously we can’t touch him during practice, and, you know, so there’s always that debate whether you had him or not. And I think there’s been a few times where our guys think they had him and they really didn’t. I think he’s moving good. And I think he’s doing a nice job with the new offense.”

Now this is some good stuff. This is great to hear. As we all know and have bitched about many, many times, 2025 didn’t look like a dual-threat Jalen Hurts season. Jalen is most dangerous when he can pick up big gains on designed runs or can make something out of nothing with his legs when he’s flushed out of the pocket. This is how Jalen should be used. He’s at his best when he keeps defenses guessing.

Unfortunately, whether it’s because of the scheme, or injuries, or decision making, or a mix of everything, Jalen hasn’t been running the way he used to. Again, this isn’t news. This very website has written about it many times. Kinker put it well in this blog from last December; I think this is a pretty helpful reminder for all of us as August rolls along and we set our expectations for QB1 this season:

• He is a dual-threat quarterback.
• He has never been a pro-style pocket passer.
• His ball protection in 2024 was elite and a significant factor in the Super Bowl run.
• The only reason the tush push was successful and (mostly) unique to the Eagles was because of Hurts’ physical traits.
• His ability to scramble, extend plays, and make off-schedule throws is typically high-level, and reminiscent of what Donovan McNabb did in his first five Eagles seasons.
• …The question is whether or not the Eagles can get back to the identity that made him Super Bowl MVP in the first place. If they can’t run the ball with Saquon, they’re not going to be successful. If they aren’t using Jalen with designed runs, they’re not going to be successful. If Jalen doesn’t scramble effectively and extend plays with his feet, they’re not going to be successful. If he has to throw the ball too many times in each game, they’re not going to be successful. If he’s turning the ball over, they’re not going to be successful. And if he can’t do those things, or won’t do those things, then certainly you turn the page and move on. But before we even reach that point, we have to see if the square peg can be removed from the round hole.

With all that context in mind, Vic’s update from camp is extremely promising. Maybe Jalen was battling injuries last year that we didn’t know about. Maybe his 2025 knee injury or 2024 high ankle sprain were nagging at him as last season wore on, preventing him from flashing the explosive runs we remember. Who knows. I don’t. I also do not care.

As long as Jalen is moving well now, that’s all that matters, and according to Vic, all is well on that front. Great news. Hell yeah. I don’t care that defenses aren’t allowed to tackle Jalen in camp. I’m going to choose to believe that they couldn’t even if they tried. Jalen’s too fast now. Vic said it. Fastest kid alive:
