Lot of Rumors About What Jerseys the Sixers Will Wear Next Year

There’s been a lot of chatter about what uniforms the Sixers will wear this season, and for good reason: the Sixers are in the spotlight. They have LeBron James. They have Jaylen Brown. They’ll be on national TV more than ever. People will be seeing these jerseys a lot, fans will want to buy them, and all that extra attention has led to a louder-than-usual uniform rumor mill.

Last week, there was a loose report from the NBA Uniform Tracker account saying the Sixers are bringing back their 2017-2018 City Edition cream jerseys. I bravely went on the record and said those jerseys are bad and cause Ben Simmons PTSD flashbacks for every real fan who was around for that disappointing, false-hope-ass season. They also just do not look cool, in my opinion. The cursive script on the off-white looks like a hotel towel. Hilton-embroidered-hand-towel-ass jerseys. I will never back down from this…

Since then, Unitracker also reported that the Sixers are bringing back their red Statement jerseys. If you’ll recall, the Statement jerseys first came out in 2017-2018 and pretty clearly said “Suxers” on them, then were updated in 2019-2020 to read “Phila” across the chest instead:

To me, the “Phila” update made very little difference. I think the Statement jerseys are not good. They look like Christmas. This take seems less divisive than my cream jerseys take. No one seems happy about the rumored return of the Statement jerseys:

To make matters worse, the throwback black uniforms of last season appear to be one and done. That’s been the rumor for a few weeks now. Some people say it’s because of a Nike rule that restricts how long teams can have classic designs in their rotation, others are saying it was always going to be a one-year thing for the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Finals team, and the organization hasn’t made an official announcement one way or the other. But from where I’m sitting, it seems like they’re gone, which would be a real, true bummer.

I should say, I take no pleasure in being this negative about the rumored jersey rotation. The Sixers are one of the great historic franchises in the NBA. They’ve had iconic jerseys in the past. They have iconic logos. They have a bunch of cool colors to choose from. My disappointment stems from knowing that the Sixers have the potential to make the best jerseys in the league. The black throwbacks last year proved it. They can do this. I believe in them more than they believe in themselves…

And if they’re feeling a little stuck or need some inspiration, I think they could just straight-up use this guy’s designs — these are sick:

How great are these? This guy gets it. He pulled from a bunch of the team’s beloved old unis and made something new and fresh and cool as hell. I keep staring at them and changing my mind about which is my favorite. After much deliberation, my current ranking is: 1) black 2) white 3) red 4) blue. But it’s close. It’ll change, I’m sure. In fact, I’m second-guessing my ranking right now. Maybe red is number two. The red one rules. You don’t see too many iterations of this 80s style. The sides/stars of that one are excellent.

Ultimately, maybe the weight of responsibility rests on the fans’ shoulders. Maybe we must bully the Sixers into recalibrating the jersey situation and using these new and improved designs. Or just bringing back the black throwbacks. Whichever one is easier/more realistic. Do the right thing, Sixers. Let us buy some cool jerseys. I demand that you take our money…

Kinkead: Here’s the thing about the black jerseys – 1) the fans like the black jerseys, 2) the fans want the black jerseys to come back permanently, 3) the customer is always right. So they should bring those back. It’s the easiest decision of all time.
