At Least Yards Isn’t Being Acquired by Some Super Mega Corporate Brewer

Lot of chatter about this Philadelphia Business Journal article from Emma Dooling, titled “Philadelphia’s largest independent craft brewery to be acquired.” –
Yards Brewing Co., Philadelphia’s largest independent craft brewer, has agreed to be acquired by a contract manufacturing company it helped launch last year as closures and consolidation continue to reshape the industry.
B3 Beverage Co.’s plan to purchase 32-year-old Yards Brewing comes amid a broader shakeup that will see another brewery pull out of the manufacturing partnership amid legal action and bring two previously announced acquisitions to a halt.
B3 Beverage founder Joe Feerrar, who also operates his Bald Birds Brewing Co. under the B3 umbrella, said the sale of Yards is expected to close later this month after securing the needed license approvals from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
Feerrar declined to disclose the acquisition price but said B3 Beverage plans to assume Yards’ existing debt as part of the deal and make a capital injection into the business. The company already put $6.2 million into Yards in November to pay down some of the brewery’s debt and provide working capital, Feerrar said.

Feerrar said (Yards co-founder Tom Kehoe) and the rest of his team would remain with Yards following the acquisition, with no disruption to its operations.
Feels less like an acquisition and more like a… structured reorganization? Or shifting of debt. They’ve essentially ceded control to others within the company they co-created in 2025. Maybe we’re splitting hairs with terminology.
The biggest takeaway, I think, is that at least Yards isn’t being gobbled up by Anheuser-Busch InBev or Boston Beer Company or Molson Coors or any of the super-mega brewers. That was my first assumption when I saw the PBJ headline. It feels more like a symbolic loss, with a big-time Philadelphia brewery giving up its independence. So while that kind of blows, it doesn’t guarantee a debasing of the product. The B3 people know Yards and know the Philadelphia area.
As you know, Yards makes good beer. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad Yards beer. Yards might not always be the sexiest choice on the draft list, but you can’t ever go wrong with Brawler, Philly Pale Ale, Long Jawns, etc. Philly Standard is good. These are staples. And the taproom is quality. The “new” one and the old one, both.
