The Philadelphia Phillies are on FIRE!
They’ve won nine games in a row, beginning with the Field of Dreams game out in Iowa, so maybe there was something about the cornfields that got this team going. They’re now 73-58 and three games behind the Atlanta Braves, who are 3-7 over their last ten. The Phils have increased their World Series odds at PA and NJ betting apps from +2000 to +1600 over the past week and now have the third highest ticket percentage and fifth highest handle percentage at BetMGM.
Here are 9 statistics from the 9-game winning streak. If we could fit one more 9 in here we could pay tribute to the late Herman Cain and his 9-9-9 plan:
- +34 Run Differential: The Phillies outscored opponents 64–30 across the streak, averaging 7.1 runs per game while allowing just 3.3.
- Team batting breakout: The lineup collected exactly 100 hits in 9 games, slashing an incredible .321 / .384 / .490 (.875 OPS) with 22 doubles, 2 triples, and 9 home runs.
- Pitching dominance: Phillies pitchers combined for a 2.85 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across 82 innings, racking up 94 strikeouts (10.3 K/9).
- Alec Bohm trying to rewrite the script: Bohm went 16-for-35 (.457) with 5 doubles, a triple, a homer, and 12 RBIs in 8 games, striking out just 3 times and posting a 1.215 OPS.
- Luis Arraez arises: Arraez broke out in a big way, batting .441 (15-for-34) with 2 doubles, a homer, 7 runs, and only 1 strikeout in 35 plate appearances.
- On-base Bryce Harper mastery: Harper slashed .344 / .488 / .500 (.988 OPS), drawing 9 walks and scoring 10 runs.
- Schwarbombs for days: Schwarber provided the thunder with 4 home runs and 9 RBIs, accounting for nearly half the team’s long balls during the streak and winning it on Sunday afternoon with a walk-off Schwarbomb.
- Execution in the clutch: Five of the nine wins were decided by two runs or fewer, including one-run thriller victories over Miami (6-5 on 8/17) and St. Louis (7-6 in extras on 8/21).
- Swinging and hitting: The Phillies hitters struck out just 48 times (5.3 K/game) while Phillies pitchers racked up 94 strikeouts, nearly doubling the opponent’s total. That’s good for a +46 strikeout differential.
Notably, they’ve received some decent starts from Andrew Painter and Aaron Nola during this stretch. Painter conceded five runs in five innings in Minnesota, but rebounded with seven strong innings of one-run ball on Saturday against the Cardinals. He struck out eight batters. Nola pitched 12 innings against the Twins and Marlins, Field of Dreams Game included, and allowed just two solo home runs in 12 innings of work. The knuckle curve looks great and he’s really settled in after a rough start to the year.
When you look at the Kalshi trends going back to August 13th, the start of the streak, the Phillies had a 50% chance to win 86 games this season. Now it’s 50% to win 90 games, which they can do if they finish 17-14 or better down the stretch.
It would be their fourth season in a row with 90 wins. Pretty wild considering they started 9-19 and fired Topper.
