Let’s get the latest on the Villanova quarterback situation:

If he does, he’ll obviously be the starter. If not, then Robby Russo, who’s in his fourth year, senior, pretty much been a backup his career here so far, and then Nolan DiLucia. Those are the two that are pretty much going for the starting role if McQuaide is out.”

Here’s the CliffsNotes:

• Villanova wants to return 5th-year quarterback McQuaide, who threw for 3,092 yards and 24 touchdowns last season. He’s played three NCAA seasons and one JUCO season.
• The NCAA denied a waiver for this 5th season.
• McQuaide argues that his JUCO season and earlier COVID disruptions should not count against his eligibility.
• An Ohio judge granted a preliminary injunction on August 1st, which would allow him to play. (McQuaide is from Ohio)
• Nova is moving to the Patriot League this season, which has a four-year eligibility rule.
• The Patriot League denied McQuaide’s eligibility in a move separate from the NCAA and the Ohio judge.
• Nova appealed with the conference and lost.

The Cats open Friday night with William and Mary. They have a couple of backups ready to go, which kind of stinks for those guys because they’ve both spent the last few weeks wondering if they’re going to play or not. Lots of uncertainty because of this strange situation.

Alas, there’s not much of an angle here for Nova unless there’s some path to somehow forcing the Patriot League to defer to the judge that issued the preliminary injunction. But time is running out.

The question of McQuaide’s eligibility pertains to his 2022 season at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. In the original waiver request to the NCAA, Villanova argued that the COVID-19 pandemic directly led to the quarterback’s single season with the junior college. McQuaide contends that the pandemic stunted his development in high school, and he landed at Kent State as a walk-on. After one year redshirting with the Golden Flashes, he transferred to Mississippi Gulf Coast before two seasons at Nicholls State. Villanova described the move to a JUCO as a “necessary bridge rather than a choice to ‘use’ an additional season.”

JUCO programs are not under the purview of the NCAA, but seasons spent at that level historically counted toward student-athletes’ eligibility. However, Villanova had requested that the season should not count as one of McQuaide’s allotted seasons of eligibility.

Whatever happens, we are pulling for the Wildcats. Hopefully they smash the Tribe on Friday night and dedicate the win to Patty McQuaide. Go Cats go!
