Luis Arraez is Not on the Phillies Wild Card Roster

Phillies 2nd baseman Luis Arraez is not on the Wild Card roster, Don Mattingly told reporters in Atlanta just moments ago. Otto Kemp will take his spot and the Phillies will carry three catchers.

Arraez went down on an awkward play at first base on Thursday vs. the Milwaukee Brewers and has not played since. The Phillies were hoping that Arraez was going to feel better and ready to go by Tuesday’s game, but that was not the case.

Otto Kemp will take his spot on the roster, Mattingly said. Kemp will obviously not start, but he will be a bench bat for the Wild Card series. The assumption, with Chris Sale on the mound for Game 1, is that the Phillies will go with Edmundo Sosa at third base. Bryson Stott will move back to 2nd, where he played on Sunday afternoon.

Although Mattingly did not reveal his lineup for Game 1, he said that “we can assume” what outfield guys will be out there. If the Phillies stick to their LHP plan that they’ve rode for a while, then it’ll be Bryan De La Cruz in left field and Derek Hill in CF.

Other Notes from Don Mattingly

  • Jesús Luzardo will start, “or should I say open,” Game 1. They do not know how far exactly Luzardo can go, but Mattingly acknowledged that Luzardo is a competitor and won’t want to come out.
  • Andrew Painter will be in the bullpen for Game 1, and the assumption is that Painter could follow Luzardo, depending on where the Braves are in the lineup.
  • Cristopher Sanchez will start Game 2.
  • Aaron Nola “most likely” will start Game 3, if necessary, but Mattingly noted that Game 3 is obviously an “all hands on deck” game.
  • Jonathan Bowlan is on the roster for the Wild Card round. He has not pitched since September 17th.
  • The Phillies will stick with JT Realmuto, Garrett Stubbs, and Rafael Marchan on the roster

The Phils are a +165 underdog in Game 1 across Pennsylvania sports betting apps and NJ sports betting apps. The series winner odds are fairly close, with the Braves carrying a -130 number and the Phillies at +110.
