Call Me Crazy – But I’m Excited to See the Eagles Play This Weekend

I know the Dallas Cowboys’ defense is trash.

I get it.

But I liked what I saw from the Eagles’ offense last week. We saw the typical errors we usually see from offenses headed by a backup quarterback still getting their bearings and also not having all healthy starters available, but it was something to build on as we move along this season.

I don’t even think the Washington Commanders are a bad team – they’ve had some pretty hard-fought games against top teams this season so far. But with another week to jell and get on the same page after seeing some improvements in the run and passing game, I can see the Eagles’ offense not being a chore to watch this weekend.

Let’s be fair, at this point, I don’t think very many of us believe in this team to make the playoffs even in a terrible NFC East. The Giants don’t exactly look like a very good team, but they’re winning games. The Cowboys probably have the most talent on offense in the division again, and even with their current struggles, could easily win the division. So I’ve shifted my “Watch-O-Meter” to “Let’s just have fun.”

Nonsense?

I get it.

Giving up?

Not really. This division stinks. I really don’t care about the 2027 NFL Draft yet. And, hey, it’s been a while since we’ve heard an excited Merrill Reese and Mike Quick.

A win this weekend puts the Eagles at 3-5 with another divisional game against the Giants before their bye week. It could be a lot worse heading into a bye week at 4-5 with a 3-1 division record. But the first step starts this weekend against the Commanders. A better offense could make a better defense and make for a better overall product on the field.

So while I’m excited to see how this offense answers the call, I’m also excited to see how this defense responds to the absolute embarrassing show they put on in front of their home fans Monday night. The defense as a whole hasn’t been good all season, but the talent is still there and they’re still relatively healthy. The defense is going to have to be the strength of this team. The Commanders are coming off a bye week, and that could certainly help them. But if the Eagles’ defense can actually show up and play to their expectations, it could be a wrap by halftime.

Even if the Eagles struggle, getting out of Week 8 with a win is all that matters. With offensive coordinator Sean Mannion reportedly, uh, doing his job, the offense looked better the game after he changed how he was approaching film study during the week. If he continues doing this, it could help the offense exponentially. It’s clearly what this team needs. If players aren’t going to hold each other accountable, it’s at least good to see one coach do it.
