Bryce Harper is pretty active on TikTok. He put out that one video a few months ago where he brushed his teeth like an escaped lunatic, which weighed heavily on my mind for a few weeks after I saw it, but then I never thought about his strange content again. Until recently, that is, when Bryce’s TikTok returned with some semi-upsetting stuff: in the comment section of an odd video where he rambles to himself about nonsense for a while for no real reason, Bryce said he likes the offseason better than the baseball season:

I’m of two minds about this. On one hand, playing baseball for the Phillies is Bryce Harper’s job, and I can understand anyone saying they prefer not working to working. Having off is sick. Hanging out with your family and friends and sleeping in and watching TV and not having anything pressing on your schedule is real good stuff, and MLB players get like five months of that every year. Imagine how great that would feel, especially in the first month-ish of the offseason, where Bryce is now. Probably feels like the first week of summer as a kid, but even better because 1) the offseason is twice as long and 2) MLB players are adults who have more options to do fun stuff than kids do (access to a car, money, parents cannot tell you what to do, etc.). All that considered, no wonder Bryce is pumped. You can hear it in his voice. It’s higher-pitched than usual. The guy is stoked to chill. I would be too. Congrats on chilling, Bryce.

On the other hand, I would prefer not hearing this from Bryce Harper, the face of the Phillies, a team coming off yet another disappointing playoff exit. It’d be one thing if that didn’t just happen. Like, I bet Milwaukee fans wouldn’t care if Christian Yelich said this. He probably could’ve announced “I love the offseason way more than playing baseball” into a microphone over and over for an hour straight at the Brewers World Series parade, and the fans would’ve cheered the whole time. But the Brewers are winners, and the Phillies are not. That makes Bryce’s comment slightly annoying here.

Sorry you have to endure such hardship during the season, Bryce. Sorry the baseball schedule doesn’t provide you ample time to film yourself giddily muttering about matcha in a large empty kitchen. But I can’t help but wonder if you’d enjoy the season season more if you and the Phillies tried winning in October. Maybe get some big, clutch hits instead of letting your bats go cold when the playoffs start. Maybe even try winning a World Series. That might be fun. Could be worth a try. Something to think about.
