Billy King Thinks Your Stoopid

Billy King was on the 97.5 morning show today for some reason (I guess someone heard “terrible Kings trade” and that triggered thoughts of Billy). They asked the guy who batted around .075 on his career trades what the Sixers should do with Jahlil Okafar. King floated the common misconception Jah can learn to defend:
You've got young talent, and you can't let young talent walk away for nothing. He can be a better defender – @bkdefend on Okafor

But that’s not even close to the most aggravating thing the worst GM in basketball history (not named Vlade) said on the radio this morning:
We had a deal the night before where we were getting McGrady and we were giving up Larry Hughes and then Toronto got cold feet – @bkdefend

Bullshit. Trades fall through all the time because, well, one team realizes “oh man we do not want to do this deal.” But King says the crooked media derailed his Larry Hughes for Tracy McGrady deal? FAKE NEWS! Knowing King, the deal likely would have been McGrady for Hughes, nine first round picks, and naming rights to any future arena. So while King peddles this fantasy, let’s look at a small sampling of deals he actually completed:
There was of course the Paul Pierce and KG disaster, where King single-handedly ruined the future of the Brooklyn Nets by giving up multiple first round picks for players who were long past their prime. In the aftermath of that deal, the desperate-to-rebuild Nets – who have the worst record in the NBA this year – will pick in the high 20s this year and won’t have a first rounder next year.
Or there was the time he traded two scrubs and a 2012 first round pick for Gerald Wallace. That pick became Damian Lillard.
He also gave up Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, a 2011 first round pick that eventually became Gorgui Dieng, and cash, for Deron Williams, a centerpiece he failed to build around.
And with the Sixers, he completed trades for such studs as Matt Harpring, Kenny Thomas, Keith Van Horn, and Corliss Williamson.
In fact, the only big name King brought in that really helped his team was probably Dikembe Mutombo. He was acquired by giving up Toni Kukoc, Theo Ratliff, Nazr Mohammed, and Pepe Sanchez. How did the Sixers get Toni Kukoc? By giving up Bruce Bowen, Billy Ownens, and – oh would you look at that – Larry Hughes.
The lesson here? Don’t trust any Billy King stories. There is a 0.0% chance that anyone ever agreed to give up Tracy McGrady for Larry Hughes. The only person who would’ve done so… is Billy King.
When he's not writing about sports here or ranting about them on Twitter, Jim is probably watching X-Files on Netflix or drinking a beer somewhere. Jim has nothing against hockey, it's just not his style. He once met Duce Staley at a Sixers game.
