Charlies Barkley called into the WIP Morning Show today, where Howard Eskin was filling in for Angelo Cataldi, and, among other hilarious things, Barkley was, apparently, duped by Joe Conklin, who called in posing as Jim Lynam:

I specifically remember you going after Armon Gilliam, saying “the guy can’t play and he got a Gumby haircut.”

“Listen, nice guy. Nice guy. Very nice guy, Armon Gilliam. I didn’t like the guy because he played chess. I don’t remember any of the other brothers playing chess. He could never find anybody to play chess with.”

And what was your problem with Dave Hoppen?

“I liked Dave Hoppen. He wasn’t a great player but he worked hard.”

You singled him out as being white.

“No, no, no, no. If you want to know what happened, I’ll tell you what happened. People were complaining because we had an all black team. So the Sixers said we got to keep one white player, that’s all I said. But let me tell you something: we had black guys who sucked! That’s hard to do. The Sixers were the only organization in the NBA who could find black guys who wouldn’t play.”

Listen around the 18-minute work as Charles talks to who he thinks is his former coach.
