Roman Quinn is Getting Called Up

The Roman Empire is about to expand to Philadelphia.

Per NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury, the Phillies are calling up switch-hitting OF Roman Quinn ahead of game two of their series with the Reds:

Roman Quinn will join the Phillies tonight in Cincinnati. Switch-hitting OF who can really run and play defensive. Should provide spark off the bench

Quinn was a guy I remember bantering about years ago on the now-defunct Phillies Message Board. The former shortstop-turned-outfielder’s injury list has been extensive:

• torn Achilles tendon
• torn quad
• concussion
• strained ligament in his elbow
• torn ligament in his right middle finger

The last injury is the most recent and arguably the most significant in his career. Quinn, now 25, has seemed poised to make a jump to the major league roster, but his inability to stay healthy has constantly derailed any hopes of him making such a jump and sticking with the big club.

In 25 games for Lehigh Valley, Quinn hit for a slash line of .296/.349/.439 with 2 HRs, 11 RBI, and 13 stolen bases. The 13 SB in 25 games certainly speaks to his speed and base running ability, something this team desperately needs. Defensively, it’s that same speed that helps him tremendously in the outfield.

This isn’t Quinn’s first time on the Phillies’ roster, however. He did earn a call-up in 2016, during which he went 15-57 (.263) with 10 runs, 6 RBI, and 8 walks.

Here’s hoping this call-up lasts and Quinn becomes a terror on the base paths.
