Eagles Propose a Rule that Would Add Tenths of Seconds to the Game Clock

The Eagles proposed a bunch of rule changes for the upcoming season, including another try at the 4th & 20 possession rule, which I still don’t quite understand. Here are the Eagles proposed rule changes via PHLY’s Zach Berman:

  • Eliminate the first touch spot after the receiving team possesses the ball
  • Permit a team to maintain possession of the ball after a score by substituting one offensive play (4th and 20 from the kicking team’s 20-yard line) for an onside kickoff attempt
  • Move the trade deadline to the Tuesday after Week 10 games (Proposed with other clubs)
  • Require game clocks to display tenths of seconds for the final 60 seconds of each half

I love, LOVE the tenths on the clock proposal! Sports never can have enough buzzer beaters. And it’s March. There’s nothing better than buzzer beaters in March.

Back to the 4th and 20 rule though. So a team would score and then would have one opportunity to complete a 4th and 20 play? Okay. I guess this is better than an onside kick, which were only recovered at a 5.6% rate according to the NFL in 2022. The Eagles have proposed in the past that the 4th and 20 play would happen at the team’s own 20 so if they don’t convert, the defense would take over in the redzone. Thank god Riverboat Ron was fired because that is way too much power for him. It’d definitely be more exciting, but does this mean the onside kick becomes extinct? I still love the onside kick’s element of surprise. Remember Sean Payton after halftime of the Super Bowl? That was electric:
