Fletcher Cox Confirms that Teams Were Showing Trade Deadline Interest

Fletcher Cox was the subject of trade rumors, but was not moved at the deadline. He confirmed Friday that teams were indeed interested, but that the Eagles wanted him in Philadelphia and he wanted to be in Philadelphia. He’s happy to remain here and ready to play Sunday.

“They wanted me here; Mr. Lurie wanted me here,” said Cox. “This organization wanted me here. I wanted to be here. I’ve been here for 10 years and happy to be here.”

So we move on to the next topic. Is he cool with Jonathan Gannon? The veteran defensive tackle was critical of the first-year defensive coordinator when he noted after the Las Vegas game that he “didn’t agree” with what was called on defense. He doesn’t get paid to chase screens, according to him.

Gannon brushed aside the comment, noting that Cox is an “unselfish” player who wants to win. There’s communication between player and coordinator to figure things out, and Friday, Cox said this when asked about the current relationship between the two:

“It’s good. He understands me and I understand him. He’s been doing a good job with everything. As a player, you have to expect that you’re not going to get everything you want, because at the end of the day, he’s still the coach, the coordinator. We have to work hand in hand. Jon has been doing a good job and we’re just getting ready for this weekend.”

The Eagles were exponentially more aggressive in Detroit. They blitzed. They got to Jared Goff. They mixed in some single-high safety and got away from the vanilla two-deep safety template of past games. We can sit here and say “it was just Detroit,” and it was, but if the Eagles come out Sunday doing those same things then we’ll call it what it is: progress.
