Howie Roseman Suggests a Deli Counter to Streamline the Question Asking Process at Eagles Press Conferences
If you’ve ever listened to an Eagles press conference, you know the beats are always fighting to get their questions in, which results in people speaking over one another. Heck, just a few weeks ago John Mullen told Reuben Frank to “shut up,” but luckily cooler heads prevailed and we avoided fisticuffs.
Howie Roseman had a thought on Thursday:
Truly, this is a good idea. How many delis are there in Philadelphia anyway? 5,000? 10,000? The sponsorship opportunities are myriad. You walk into the Birds’ auditorium, take a number from the counter, then sit down and wait to ask your question. It could even be a full-serve deli with gabagool and subs.
The Eagles beat has always been somewhat of a circus. Guys are always climbing over one another to get their questions in. You kind of have to be aggressive, or else you’ll never get to ask anything at all. But it’s detrimental, and creates this rushed environment where sometimes the questions aren’t very good or the beats aren’t paying attention because they’re trying to time out the end of an answer to begin speaking. The PR team could call out individuals if they wanted to, but I’m not totally sure what their philosophy is in that regard. The other teams don’t have as many reporters in the house, so things are naturally more orderly with fewer people interrupting each other.
I actually have a different idea entirely. The beat writers represent the fans, yeah? They essentially serve as the conduit between the fans and the team. What if we made Eagles beat writer an elected position? Kind of like school board. We vote every year for 12 writers who will have the opportunity to ask questions at the press conferences and go into the locker room. We will remove them from their private sector journalism organizations and make them public employees of the Commonwealth.
