Jason Dumas vs. WIP Afternoon Show on the Topic of Glazing
Saw this on the timeline:
He’s talking about the WIP Afternoon show, which posted a Wednesday clip in which Spike Eskin called Dumas “a guy who has decided that glazing Jalen (Hurts) is more important than Eagles Insider of the Year.“ The “Insider of the Year” thing is an unserious running bit, for context, but Spike I guess is suggesting that Dumas is being a fanboy instead of a journalist. In the retort, Dumas talks about how sneaker and fashion culture is important to black Eagles fans. It’s not for “them,” he says, “them” being white media and fans. Then he asserts that there are racial “undertones” in the criticism.
So it’s a pretty sad beef. I have no inside information, but it wouldn’t surprise me if this goes back several years to when Dumas was reporting on Ben Simmons and the Sixers while working in San Francisco. There are Rights to Ricky Sanchez podcast episodes that discuss Dumas tweets, for instance, the “organized groups of Sixers fans” planning to protest in Camden, which was an incredibly stupid report. That never made sense because you can’t even get into the practice facility anyway. It’s gated and the players and coaches park in the center of the compound. Nobody knew anybody who was organizing protests in Camden.
Dumas annoyed a lot of Sixers fans back then because he was obviously carrying someone’s water, and in talking about the protest topic on the show, Spike can’t even get through the report without laughing:
That’s where I think this comes from, but whatever. 271 words is more than enough for this story.
