Never Forget That Cam Jurgens Played with a Broken Back to Help the Eagles Win a Super Bowl

Cam Jurgens was traded to the Ravens on Wednesday. The Eagles swapped the two-time Pro Bowler and a 2027 7th-round pick for a 2027 5th-round pick and a 2028 2nd-round pick.
It feels like the end of an era, in a way. Along with Lane Johnson announcing his retirement on Tuesday, Jurgens’ departure is just a reminder of how far removed this team is from its 2024-2025 Super Bowl roster, which is kind of a bummer. That’s how I see it, anyway. I’m sure plenty of Birds fans feel the opposite after seeing how Cam played this year. It’s been rough.
Jurgens was moved from center to left guard in Week 2 after Landon Dickerson was put on the IR with a knee injury, and he’s been very, very bad there. In three games at left guard, he allowed 13 total pressures (1 sack, 1 hit, 11 hurries) across 111 pass-blocking snaps, which is 3rd-most among left guards in the NFL (despite playing one less game there than the regular full-time starters). His 11.71% pressure rate allowed ranks 2nd-highest among NFL left guards and 3rd-highest among all guards. He allowed a team-high five pressures and accidentally caused a fumbled goal-line snap by pulling too early against the Rams. According to Pro Football Focus, he ranked 73rd out of 74 qualified NFL guards with an overall PFF score of 38.7.
Bad stuff, for sure. I’m not disputing that. But I do think it’s worth remembering the good times with Cam. The guy was one of the best centers in the league for a minute there. He was a key part of what may have been the best offensive line ever in 2024 and 2025, helping Saquon Barkley to rush for 2,000 yards and helping the Birds to win a Super Bowl. And lest we forget, he played in that game with a brutal back injury:
“That Super Bowl we won. I mean, I herniated — I had a herniated disc, and then right before the playoffs, my disc like broke off and got wrapped around my sciatic nerve. So it was just like suffocating my leg. It was hard to walk. I don’t’ know how I was playing. It was easily the worst month of my life, but then also kind of the best month because we won the Super Bowl. But it was just miserable, dude.”
This sounds like the worst injury of all time. “Disc broke off” is gnarly as hell. “Wrapped around my sciatic nerve” makes me lightheaded just typing it. This is the kind of injury you’d put a horse down for, and Cam Jurgens played through it to win Philadelphia a Super Bowl. Insane. The guy’s a legend. Let’s remember him in Philly that way.
