Minor Gripe: Nick Sirianni Shouldn’t Get Any Questions if Howie Roseman is Also at the Press Conference

I reviewed the transcript from Wednesday’s Philadelphia Eagles press conference featuring both Nick Sirianni and Howie Roseman.

Roseman received nine questions and Sirianni received seven.

But I personally believe that Howie should have received all 16 of the questions and Nick should have received 0. Nick should have just sat there twiddling his thumbs the entire time.*

Why? Because Howie rarely speaks. Roseman does press what – a half dozen times a year? He speaks to the scribes maybe 5-7 times, and those press conferences are scheduled around NFL calendar milestones, like the draft, the start of training camp, and the end of the season.

Sirianni does three press conferences a week when the season begins, and speaks to reporters after each game. So he talks more than 50 times a year. He also does the weekly phone call with the WIP morning show, so we hear from him A LOT. There is no shortage of access and availability when it comes to the head coach.

There is much less time with the general manager, and so common sense would suggest that you maximize the time you have when Howie does get up there to answer questions. Every single question should go to him because you have the rest of camp, regular season, and postseason to talk to Sirianni.

Now, to apply an asterisk, there are questions that are sort of thrown out there for either guy to answer, and the recipients may decide to step up and take a specific question or toss it to the other guy. But this deferral can be avoided by specifically steering the query towards Roseman instead of Sirianni, i.e., “this is a question for Howie,” or “Howie – (insert question here).” Otherwise, they may use this vagueness to weasel out of a question they don’t want to answer. So you gotta narrow the focus and not allow this.

Think of this like going the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in the summer. Nick Sirianni is Dave Matthews Band. We’ve seen DMB 37 million times in a row. Howie is System of a Down. SOAD rarely tours. So you have to use the limited opportunity to go see SOAD when they do decide to come around, knowing that Dave will be here next year, and the following year, and the year after that.

editor’s note 1: Admittedly, it’s very lame to sit here and criticize the beats from afar, and it’s fair to ask – “why don’t you drag your lazy ass down there to ask some questions?” The truth is, I can’t. I have a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old and I need to drop them off at summer camp at 9 a.m. I don’t have enough time to dump them on some high school kids making $10 an hour and then drive or take the train down to South Philly. It’s logistically impossible to get there in time. So I would if I could, but I’m incapable.

*editor’s note 2: – Nick is not going to feel left out if he doesn’t receive a question. I think most of these guys would prefer NOT having to speak at all. So you’d actually be doing him a favor.
