President Trump Wants the Commanders and Guardians to Use “Redskins” and “Indians” Again

President Trump posted about the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians this weekend. He wants the teams to go back to using “Redskins” and “Indians,” and threatened the former with a “restriction” if they don’t –

It feels like it was 500 years ago, and not five, but during the Black Lives Matter movement, a bunch of teams switched their names to something more “appropriate,” for lack of a better word. The Indians became the Guardians, the Redskins became the Commies, and the Edmonton Eskimos became the Elks. There were renewed discussions regarding other teams, like the Braves, Chiefs, Florida State Seminoles, etc, but those names stayed in place while some tweaks were made instead, for instance, Kansas City in 2020 banning headdresses at Arrowhead Stadium.
Josh Harris went on the record in 2024 to say that the Commies will not be going to back to the Redskins nickname. There’s been a ton of reporting on this, and poll after poll after poll among Native Americans has not produced any kind of clear consensus. Some native leaders and groups find the word offensive and others do not. So how do you solve the conundrum? You let white people make the decision, of course! (thick sarcasm)
What’s most important here is the possibility of restrictions being placed on the Washington Football Team. A poll of 31 other NFL teams found 100% support for this.
