Flyers Lock Up Coots on a Long-Term Deal

The Flyers today locked up Sean Couturier on a long term deal:

Contract goes into effect beginning with the 2022-2023 season, when Coots is 30 years old, so the life of the contract will take him to age 37. That might seem a bit alarming, and when he slows down a bit, so be it. His game isn’t predicated on speed, and a lot of what he does now should scale pretty well into his mid-30s. Plus, paying $7.75 million in the early part of that deal is really nice, considering the fact that right now that dollar amount would barely have him in the top 50 league-wide, right around the same ballpark as Jared Spurgeon and Evgeni Kuznetsov. I think the group consensus is that the salary figure beginning with a 7 instead of an 8 is a very good thing.

Coots has been here his entire career, and is one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL. Former Selke winner. 41 points last year, 59 the prior year, and two straight 76-point seasons before that. He’s the type of guy you lock up.
