It’s Officially Time to Bet the Flyers to Make the Playoffs

                            Flyers win again.
Nothing to see here, just five victories in their last six games, including two in the shootout and one in overtime. They’re in the middle of a lengthy home stand, and the competition level has cooled off a bit after opening with three of the NHL’s best teams, but they have the makings of a playoff squad, and that’s why we’re getting in at +240 before the value decreases:
Is it crazy? I don’t think so. They’ve got 13 points in ten games, which amounts to a .650 points percentage and a 1.3 point-per-game pace. Wild Card teams, going back a few seasons now, typically finish in the 94-99 point range, and if the Flyers come back down to Earth a little, but settle in somewhere around 1.2 PPG, that’s 98 points right there.
In the near term, we’ll see what’s going on with this Sean Couturier injury. Coots has nine points and is second on the team behind Trevor Zegras. Travis Konecny and Matvei Michkov haven’t been at their best and you think/hope they’ll pick up the pace. The goaltending has been holding up, but it’s a long year. We’re probably going to get a solid determination on whether or not this is a playoff team when the Flyers come through that Thanksgiving gauntlet of New Jersey, at Tampa, at Florida, at Islanders, at Jersey, then home to Pittsburgh. They get Buffalo at the X, then play Colorado, San Jose, and Vegas before a home-and-home with Carolina. If they get through that and they’re still hovering around a Wild Card spot, then we’re feeling pretty good about the boys.
If you’re into analytics, Money Puck’s formula has the Flyers with a 22.3% chance to make the postseason after playing 12% of the schedule. We’re Flyered the fuck up!
