Ranking Early Nicknames for the New Xfinity Mobile Arena

Comcast-Spectacor and HBSE announced on Tuesday that the Wells Fargo Center will join the dust bin of history in September, becoming the “Xfinity Mobile Arena.”
Other items in the dustbin include the Flyers’ and Sixers’ 2024-2025 seasons.
Here’s an arbitrary ranking of some of the early nicknames shared on social and in the Crossing Broad Slack:
- The Cell
- The X
- XMA / The XMA
- XM
- The Call Center
- The Phone
- The XBOX
By far, “The Cell” is the in the top spot. It’s a double entendre. You’ve got your phone reference but your prison/dungeon reference as well. The only question is whose jail is it? Are the Flyers and Sixers putting the opponent in a cell, or are the fans locked in the cell, yearning for playoff success?
“The X” is good. Number two I’d say. We can do DMX memes with it. X gon’ give it ya. 1, 2, X is coming for you. 3, 4, better lock yo door. Definitely can work with that.
XMA or “The XM” is alright. Wells Fargo Center was sometimes shortened to “WFC” in writing, but nobody actually said that verbally. I thought “The Call Center” was kind of unique, but there’s no bite to it. The phone reference is in there, but how does a bunch of people sitting around with headsets refer to sport? It doesn’t. Same with “The Phone.” Maybe that catches on as slang. “Yo bro we’re going to the phone for the Sixers game!” And then someone in Slack said “The XBOX” but I don’t think they were being entirely serious.
EDIT – shout out to Facebook commenter Mike, who said – “How about “The Dead Zone” since we can’t win a fucking chip in that forsaken place? It’s where star players go to die.”
