The Flyers Just Made an Interesting Coaching Hire

The Flyers just announced the hiring Kris Knoblauch as assistant coach:

Knoblauch, 38 (9/24/1978), comes to the Flyers from the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, where he had been the head coach since November 29, 2012. Knoblauch coached the Otters to 50-win seasons in each of the last four years. Erie won the OHL championship this past season and reached the final of the Memorial Cup, where it fell to Windsor 4-3.

Cool. So what, right? Well, while coaching said Otters, Knoblauch developed a number of talented young prospects, but one stands out: Connor McDavid.

McDavid has one year left on his deal with the Oilers. He will become a restricted free agent after next season. The Oilers have said it is their top prirority to extend him this summer. But, he’s due for very big raise and could be asked to take a hometown discount so the Oilers aren’t tied up financially. All of this is a very long way of saying that this Tweet from Puck Daddy will likely never become a thing:
