The Flyers’ October Schedule Sucks

So last year the Western Canada road swing took place after Christmas. They beat Vancouver 4-1 then lost three in a row to Seattle, Edmonton, and Calgary, or “Cal-Gary” as Barry Melrose would say. They did the same trip in February the year prior, again going 1-3. Sometimes they’ll throw Winnipeg in the mix, but with the Kraken out there now, the northwest road swing is usually four games instead of three. Prepare to fall asleep on your couch as Edmonton goes up 3-1 at 12:15 a.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Jokes aside, that’s a tough schedule to start. A four game road trip and three back to backs in October. They do Vancouver and Calgary on a back-to-back, then two days to dick around in Alberta before the Oilers and Kraken. There’s only one day between Seattle and the home opener, so they have to fly back and get adjusted right away to play the Canucks on the 19th. From there it’s 6 of 8 at home before they do the Carolina/Tampa/Florida road trip.

The good news is that the back end looks reasonable. If they’re in playoff contention come April, they close with three teams that didn’t make the postseason last year. There’s a three-game set with the Habs, Sabres, and Predators, and a seven-game home stand that precedes five on the road. That’s probably going to be the make-or-break portion of the schedule, that big stretch of February and March where they play 11 of 13 at home.
