This is another move where Danny Briere had to circle back and accept a different outcome. First it was trading Kevin Hayes for nothing and retaining half his salary (because of the Torey Krug issue), now it’s waiving DeAngelo outright instead of working out a better return from Carolina.
That’s less than ideal, but it’s also aggressive and somewhat admirable, because if you’re committed to the rebuild, then you get rid of guys that aren’t part of the future, and you do that by whatever means necessary. In this case, when Noah Cates filed for arbitration, it opened up a second buyout window and now TDA is gone.
Whatever it takes. In Danny B we trust. It’s a new era of orange.

This isn't a failed trade.
Instead of waiting, the @NHLFlyers instead chose to go the buyout route.
Per a team source, there was a limited time to exercise their right to buy out following the Noah Cates signing.— Anthony SanFilippo (@AntSanPhilly) July 14, 2023
keep an additional salary retention slot for 2023-24 in case there are other trades made between now and the deadline in which they would be willing to retain salary for better return.
Frankly, this makes more sense to me.
