What’s More Likely: $10 Million a Year for Travis Konecny, or Being Struck by Lightning Twice?

This is going on 48 hours but I forgot to post it when it came out:

There are only 17 NHL players making $10 million or more going into the 2024-2025 season.

They are:

  • Auston Matthews
  • Nathan MacKinnon
  • Connor McDavid
  • Artemi Panarin
  • Elias Pettersson
  • Erik Karlsson
  • William Nylander
  • David Pastrnak
  • Drew Doughty
  • John Tavares
  • Rasmus Dahlin
  • Mitch Marner
  • Carey Price
  • Jonathan Huberdeau
  • Alex Barkov
  • Jack Eichel
  • Bob

And then you’ve got a handful of guys in that $9.75m range, like Tyler Seguin, Johnny Hockey, and Sebastian Aho.

Is TK in that tier of players? Nope. You go down the list of point producers from last season and Konecny was 61st in the league, tied with Eichel and Bo Horvat. Eichel also played 13 fewer games. Plus, there’s always been the lingering question of whether or not TK even fits the rebuild timeline. He’s the best player on a transitional team. Does that get you $10 million a year or a trade to a contender? Some say it should be the latter. Smells like someone’s putting feelers out there. The nostrils are twitchy and the stench is pungent. TK has one more year  on his contract at $5.5 million, so I’d assume we’ve entered the typical posturing and jostling phase.
